Author: BRYAN, William Jennings Title: Letters to a Chinese Official: Being a Western View of Eastern Civilization
Description: New York, McClure, Phillips & Co, 1906. Hardcover. 12mo. Pale grey paper over boards with paper front board label. viii, 97pp. Very good. Binding lightly edgeworn, while tight and internally fine and bright. Handsome first edition of this response to the 1903 book "Letters from a Chinese Official," in which this versatile politician/orator/lawyer (just returned from a much-reported 1905 world tour) takes that anonymous author to task. This unique copy bears a choice addition: Inset into the front board is a modern (ca. 1970s) facsimile of a Bryan campaign button for the 1900 presidential election. Bryan "The Great Commoner" ran for president three times (1896, 1890, 1908) after serving Nebraska in Congress (1891-95) and before serving as Woodrow Wilson's Secretary of State (1913-15). Laid into this copy is the tiny informational leaflet with which this facsimile button was issued and, ironically, the publisher's promotional leaflet for "The Meaning of Good" by G. Lowes Dickinson (British political scientist who authored the 1903 "Letters from a Chinese Official"). A most unusual copy!.
