FREIBERGER, Edward (1857-1917) - Autograph Note Signed / Printed Handbill

Title: Autograph Note Signed / Printed Handbill
Description: This editor of the "Saturday Evening Herald" and drama critic at the "Chicago Inter Ocean" was a versatile Chicago writer who produced a volume of poetry, a history of the piano and a few plays. ANS, 8" X 10" (lettersheet), Chicago, IL, 11 December 1891. Addressed to Harry C. Kocherperger [sic]. Very good. Lightly age toned. Kochersperger (1871-1951) was a Philadelphia banker and broker. On gilt-lettered intertwining "EF" letterhead, Freiberger pens a maudlin sentiment in ink as purple as his prose: "Poetry is the sunshine of / literature: the halo of beauty / that crowns language and / glorifies thought.." Handsomely penned large and bold and signed in full at the conclusion. Whether this was a published sentiment or something penned specifically for this correspondent is unknown. On the blank inner leaf (third) is tipped a 4" X 10" printed handbill from Chicago publisher Brentano's for Freiberger's 1888 verse collection, "Wayside Pansies," which it calls "An Appropriate Holiday Souvenir" -- lengthy quotes from eleven complimentary reviews, including from the "Saturday Evening Herald" and "Chicago Inter Ocean" for whom he worked! Interesting and most unusual. .
