WOODWARD, C. Vann (1908-99) - Signed Caricature

Title: Signed Caricature
Description: This distinguished educator and famed historian of race relations and the American South won acclaim in such influential classics as "The Strange Career of Jim Crow" (1955), the Bancroft Prize-winning "Origins of the New South" (1951) and Pulitzer Prize-winning "Mary Chesnut's Civil War" (1982), which all fueled his other activities as a noted civil rights supporter. Signed Caricature, 8½" X 11", n.p. 1988. Near fine. Reproduction of a head-and-shoulders caricature of Woodward later in life, artist unknown. In the blank upper portion, Woodward signs large and bold in black fineline, dating it "88." Signed shortly after the release of John Herbert Roper Sr.'s 1987 biography "C. Vann Woodward, Southerner," which features this caricature on its front cover. Quite scarce in this form -- signed photographs of Woodward are rarely seen and a signed copy of this caricature extremely unusual. .
