Nice first edition of this significant set -- and with choice autograph addition: Tipped to first volume front flyleaf is a Typed Noted Signed from Mearns (1899-1981; Library of Congress's manuscript division chief), 1p, 8½" X 11", Washington, DC, 2 December 1955. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Lovely note on "Library of Congress" letterhead in which Mearns informs this New York Civil War Round Table' office where to contact historian Josephine Cobb, most likely to review a book for the newsletter of which Gates served as long-time editor. Boldly signed in full. Inner flyleaf of both volumes bears 1962 ownership signature and "From the Collection of The Lincoln Library of Norman H. Ziel" inkstamp. .
