HELENA VICTORIA (Princess Christian) (1846-1923) - Autograph Letter Signed

Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: The third daughter of Queen Victoria married Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein and acted as her mother's occasional secretary; she founded the Princess Christian Nursing Home at Windsor. ALS, 2pp (lettersheet), 7" X 4½", Cumberland Lodge, 16 April 1889. Addressed to "Molly." Near fine. Mounting traces on blank fourth leaf. On pale grey letterhead featuring at upper left a crown with vertical "HELENA" in ornate typeface below, Helena pens a cryptic note to a close friend in her strange script. In part: "I will not fail to mention yr. Sister in Law to Mama, when she returns home, I trust all will turn out as you wish. How long it is since we met, I do hope we may do so before long. I was abroad when your letter came, which must plead my excuse for not answering it sooner.." Signed simply "Helena." Interesting content showing that the princess was not averse to pulling strings with her mother on behalf of a friend. Queen Victoria insisted her children once grown live close to her, which is why after Helena married in 1866 she resided in Cumberland Lodge, a country manor several miles south of Windsor Castle, where she and Christian lived until 1902. .
