Author: BOYLE, Virginia Frazer Title: The Other Side: An Historic Poem
Description: Cambridge, Riverside Press, 1893. Hardcover. 12mo. Green cloth with gilt lettering, rules and decoration. vi, 64pp. Top edge gilt. Single illustration. Near fine. Bright and tight, with gilt as fresh as the day published, this superb first edition about the Civil War and its aftermath in the South bears the most intriguing of provenances: It hails from the library of Confederate First Lady Varina Howell Davis (1826-1906). On the front pastedown, she boldly signs "V. Jefferson Davis" vertically in black ink. The dedication page notes "To Confederate Soldiers Living and Dead and to the Women of the South This Poem Is Dedicated" and the single illustration (after page 26) is a full-page artist's rendering of "Jefferson Davis When Captured." Boyle (1863-1938) was a popular and highly-regarded poet and novelist, poet laureate of the United Confederate Veterans. She and Varina Davis certainly admired each other, too -- a year after Varina's death in 1906, her daughter Margaret Davis Hayes wrote an admiring letter to Boyle and presented her with a sterling silver pen and cut glass/sterling silver inkwell that had belonged to Varina Davis. A choice and quite unusual copy: A first edition of the first published title by this author bearing ownership signature of the C.S.A.'s First Lady. .
