HOWARD, Oliver O. (1830-1909) - Letter Signed

Title: Letter Signed
Description: This Union general lost his right arm at Fair Oaks, took part at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and commanded the Army of the Tennessee in Sherman's march to the sea; in 1867 he founded Howard University in Washington, DC, and served as president from 1869 to 1874. LS, 1p (lined lettersheet), 6" X p", Governor's Island, NY, 23 January 1889. Addressed to Mrs. Calvin C. Woolworth. Very good. Lightly age toned; original folds. On "Headquarters Division of the Atlantic" letterhead, Howard writes to a family friend in Albany, New York, Sarah Matterson Parker Woolworth (1838-1917) regarding his son Chancey (1863-1934). "Chancey will probably come through to-day or tomorrow, so that it is too late to communicate with him before he leaves Omaha. I hope that you and the family are very well.." Boldly signed in full. This was signed shortly after Howard was appointed to his last command, at the Department of the East (Military Division of the Atlantic), a post he filled until retiring as a major general in 1894. Cryptic but intriguing and attractive. .
