Binding mildly worn, with spine lettering rubbed; both endpapers rather age toned; faint dampstain to lower portion of some pages. A tight and decent first edition of this chronicle of the development of mechanical reapers. Steward (1841-1915) was a passionate historian of the reaper and here posits that many other than Cyrus McCormick helped develop the pioneering invention. Editor Arthur Pound (1884-1961) was an author/editor who in 1935-36 was research professor of American history at the University of Pittsburgh. It was while here that he presented this copy to a library in nearby Greencastle, penning "Presented by the author" on front flyleaf and "Greencastle Circulating / Library / 1935" on front pastedown quite large in pale blue ink. .
