JOHNSON, Curtis L. - Gunmakers of Illinois: 1683-1900 -- Volumes I and II

Title: Gunmakers of Illinois: 1683-1900 -- Volumes I and II
Description: York, PA, George Shumway Publisher, 2005. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. 4to. Tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jackets. 489pp. Numerous illustrations. Fine/fine. Part of Shunway's "Longrifle Series," this superb pair of first editions are bright and pristine. It's a wonderfully heavily-illustrated text and the author signs the title page of each volume in black ballpoint, dating each "8-3-2018." Volume I notes a limitation of 1500 copies and Johnson pens "No 379" on front flyleaf of each volume (though Volume II fails to note any limitation). Opening with a half dozen chapters on Illinois' gunsmithing history, Volume I is largely alphabetical biographies of Illinois gunsmiths (A-F) and Volume II the same (G-Z). While Volume I jacket rear flap notes "3 volumes," that certainly was aspirational -- by the time Volume II was published eight years later that jacket only notes "Volumes I and II." An outstanding pair. .
