Description: New York, Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. 288pp, vii. Near fine/very good. Jacket lightly rubbed only. Handsome first edition of what the jacket front panel calls "A Quest for Political Peace of Mind" by the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist (1899-1994). Front flyleaf is filled with his huge presentation inscription and signature in black ink: "For / Chancellor Deane W. Malott, / For making me, and so / many others, at home in / mind and spirit. / With my warm best / wishes and sincere / admiration -- / Leland Stowe / March 15, 1950 / K.U." In addition, Stowe initials the front jacket flap. Front pastedown bears elegant bookplate of the recipient, Deane Waldo Malott (1898-1996), a noted academic administrator and educator who served as assistant dean at Harvard Business School, chancellor of University of Kansas and president of Cornell University. Stowe must have visited Kansas University's campus during Malott's chancellorship (1939-51), since corner of flyleaf he inscribes bears tiny bookseller's ticket of "The Book Nook" of Lawrence, Kansas. .
