Tight, clean early (not first) printing of the journalist and historian's memoir -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Sullivan, 1p, 8½" X 5 3/4", Washington, DC, 25 April 1941. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. "It was thoughtful of you to send me your booklet, 'Amberglow', and I appreciate the inscription. I am taking the book with me this week-end when I visit my farm. Maybe it will give me some inspiration.." Boldly signed in black ink. Budding historian Gates had published "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge" in 1939 and greatly admired Sullivan's 6-volume opus, "Our Times: The United States, 1900-1925. .
