Author: NEAL, Steve Title: Mcnary of Oregon: A Political Biography
Description: Portland, OR, The Press of the Oregon Historical Society, 1985. Hardcover. Small 4to. Quarter red cloth with gilt spine lettering and blue paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. xiii, 249pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine/near fine. Sharp and lovely first edition of this biography of the powerful Oregon Republican senator (1917-44) and bearing a huge presentation inscription in blue fineline on title page: "For Adlai Stevenson, / who served with distinction / in McNary's old institution, and / whose grandfather helped / make some of this history / in the battle for / farm relief in the 1920s. / With best wishes / Steve N." The farm relief comment makes little sense, for Stevenson's grandfather was Lewis G. Stevenson, Illinois secretary of state from 1914 to 1917, who appears to have no connection to farm relief; and if Neal mistakenly assumed that the grandfather of Stevenson III was Adlai I (1835-1914), U.S. vice president under Grover Cleveland, he too had little connection with farm relief. Oregon-born journalist and historian Steve Neal died in 2004, so this confusion will remain unanswered -- but an intriguing copy in any case. .
