MISSELHORN, Roscoe - Illinois Sketches

Title: Illinois Sketches
Description: St. Louis, Swiss Village Book Store, 1985. Hardcover. Edited by Elaine Stratton. Oblong 8vo. Glossy pictorial paper over boards. 158pp. Numerous line drawings. Very good. Bit of fading near spine, else tight and near fine throughout. First edition, a tight and nice copy of this compendium of pencil drawings by this 'Norman Rockwell of the Midwest,' enhanced with historical information. Intriguing nonauthorial presentation inscription on front flyleaf: "April 15, 1986 / Hoping you have a quick / recovery, Adlai, so you can / return to your campaign trail! / Fondest Regards, / George and Doris Sangmeister." (This entirely in the hand of Doris, not George.) The "Adlai" referred to is, of course, former U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (1930-2021), who served in the Senate from 1970 to 1981. In 1986 he was the Democratic candidate for governor (a position his father Adlai II had held 1948-52) and many considered Sangmeister, an Illinois legislator, his likely running mate. Stevenson chose another instead, and in the end Republican James R. Thompson won in this controversial election. A superb presentation copy, in any case, from this wanna-be lieutenant governor to his hoped-for running mate. Sangmeister (1931-2007) went on to become a U.S. Congressman 1989-95). Choice copy!.
