PEPLER, Hilary Douglas Clark - The Wren at the Crib

Title: The Wren at the Crib
Description: Ditchling, Sussex, St. Dominic's Press, n.y. Handbill. 8vo (5" X 8½"). Single engraving. Fine. Number 1 in this fine press's "Small Rhyme Sheet" series. Choice handbill featuring this undated (circa late 1920s/early 1930s) poem, no author cited but another nearly identical printing of this same handbill notes "H.D.C.P." in type at the close. Famed English printer/poet Hilary Douglas Clark Pepler (1878-1951) co-founded the Catholic craftsmen organization The Guild of St. Joseph and St. Dominic at Ditchling in Sussex along with Eric Gill and others in 1920, then founded St. Dominic's Press in 1916 to publish books furthering his craftsman interests. The single small engraving at top showing a bird alight a branch is by Eric Gill. Very scarce and a bright, exceptional example. Another printing (noted previously) notes the poet's initials and publisher's info at bottom differs slightly, but priority is uncertain. .
