HAINES, John - Twenty Poems

Title: Twenty Poems
Description: Santa Barbara, CA, Unicorn Press, 1971. Hardcover. 8vo. Pale green cloth with black and brown lettering and decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 32pp. Near fine/near fine. A tight and lovely copy of this slim collection, with colophon at rear noting limitation of 485 numbered copies (this #412) -- not issued signed, but Haines signs on page 16 under the poem "Images of the Frost King," likely because it was the owner's favorite. This owner, whose small name/address label appears on front flyleaf, has pencilled a light "X" beneath six poems -- presumably those that Haines read at a poetry reading -- and on a blank rear inner flyleaf writes: "When he spoke with dark resonant tones Sunday evening (5-21-72) he read from unpublished & unfinished pieces as well as those in his published volumes. He commented that he used to dream about animals and now he dreams of people in his dreams. When I expressed my momentary fear that he might lose some of his Alaskan strength when I read some of his Stone Harp he said he was not happy with several either but his crystal clear diamond-core is showing again. He has learned to laugh too! How wonderful! The pumpkin girl." Haines (1924-2011) was a prolific poet and anthologist and in 1969 was appointed Poet Laureate of Alaska. A most unusual copy. .
