De Vogue (1848-1910), who penned the first two chapters, was a French polymath -- diplomat, literary critic, travel writer, archaeologist and more. Child (1846-92) penned the next five chapters and Cook (1828-1900) the eighth, with the closing ninth chapter by Russia's famed war artist Vereshchagin (1842-1904). .
