Author: HOPE, Anthony Title: The Prisoner of Zenda
Description: New York, The Limited Editions Club, 1966. Hardcover. Introduction by S.C. Roberts. Illustrations by Donald Spencer. Small 4to. Quarter burgundy calf with gilt lettering and ivory cloth with gilt medallion, slipcase. xi, 188pp. Color frontispiece, full-page color plates. Fine/near fine. Handsome, tight copy of the fourth title in the LEC's thirty-fourth series. First published in 1894 by the British author (Anthony Hope Hawkins) of cloak-and-sword romances (1863-1933), of which this was by far his best known novel, this special copy bears a unique autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is an Autograph Note Signed from Hope, 1p, 4½" X 7", London, England, 1899 March 10. Addressed to P. Keary. Very good. Mounting traces on verso. Hawkins declines an offer to bring out a lower-priced edition of one of his books -- whether a cheaper edition of "Prisoner of Zenda" seems likely but challenging to verify, for Hawkins was extremely prolific. "The book still sells well.. I think it better not to have any issue of it at a cheap price." Tipped in facing this letter is a heavy stock sepia-tone decorative-edged print, an artist's rendering of a young Hope. Rear colophon notes limitation of 1500 numbered copies (this #241) signed by artist Spencer. Laid in is the "Monthly Letter" for this title. NEWMAN 378. .
