Author: JONES, Jehu Glancy (1811-78) Title: Autograph Letter Signed
Description: This Democratic congressman from Pennsylvania (1851-58) was also one of James Buchanan's top advisors, and it was he who appointed Jones U.S. Minister to the Austrian Empire (1858-61). Handsome ALS, 1p, 4½" X 7" (lined lettersheet), Reading, PA, 31 August 1855. Addressed to General R.C. Hale (Reuben Charles Hale, 1812-63). Near fine. Boldly penned note attempting to obtain a position, likely for a constituent. Reads in part: "Dr Donegan is very anxious in the changes that may be made in the Custom House to have a salary equal to an Inspectorship; Mr Brown is kindly disposed towards him; & if you could make a suggestion to him as to place & take an interest in him you wd confer a favor on him & on me.." Hale served as quartermaster general of Pennsylvania during the war and was subject of J.C. Beckel's 1862 tune "Genl. R.C. Hale's Grand March." A nice example of congressional favor trading. .
