Author: NICOLAY, Helen Title: Personal Traits of Abraham Lincoln
Description: New York, The Century Co, 1912. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt lettering, rules and decoration, pictorial dust jacket. 387pp. Top edge gilt. Illustrations. Near fine/very good. Jacket complete and fairly attractive despite mild edgewear, a few small edge chips and (on verso) old tape mends. Tight, quite handsome first edition of this study by the daughter of Lincoln's secretary and right hand man John. Front pastedown bears two handsome noteworthy Lincolnist bookplates: At center is the "Private Library of / George P. Hambrecht" bookplate (which notes 1934 as year of acquisition and as "Gift") -- Hambrecht (1871-1943) was a noted education official, Lincoln scholar and founder of the Lincoln Fellowship of Wisconsin. Above this is the "Lincoln Library" bookplate of Joseph L. Eisendrath Jr. -- Eisendrath (1908-92) was a noted Chicago historian, author and one of the original founders of the Chicago Civil War Round Table, the first such group in the country -- eventually there were and still are hundreds -- along with Ralph G. Newman (Abraham Lincoln Book Shop founder). A lovely and scarce first edition in the rarely-present jacket and with choice provenance. MONAGHAN 2049. .
