Friendly note to this New York Civil War Round Table officer and "Lincoln Herald" book reviewer thanking him for philatelic item: "Thank you very much indeed for the first day cover from Hodgenville. This is a welcome addition to our sesquicentennial collection." Signed simply "Dave" in black fineline. Mearns (1899-1981) was the Library of Congress's long-time manuscript division chief. .
