HOWELLS, W.D. - Life of Abraham Lincoln

Title: Life of Abraham Lincoln
Description: Bloomington, Indiana University Press, 1960. Hardcover. 8vo. Grey paper over boards with gilt lettering, clear price-clipped mylar wrapper with front flap printed text. xxxii, (6pp), xii, 94pp, (5pp). Two illustrations. Near fine/very good. Minor wear to mylar wrapper, as usual. Tight and nice "first of this edition," a reprint of the Abraham Lincoln Association's 1938 edition -- itself a facsimile of the true first edition (Columbus: Follett, Foster & Co. 1860). Review slip laid in. Clyde C. Walton provides a new introduction to this edition, which precedes the 1938 editor's preface. Notes title page, "This campaign biography corrected by the hand of Abraham Lincoln in the summer of 1860 is reproduced here with careful attention to the appearance of the original volume," and sure enough Lincoln's crossouts, corrections and margin comments are reproduced in facsimile throughout. Indiana University Press published another edition of this whose only difference is the binding material (pale blue cloth) and apparently no clear mylar wrapper, but whether one has priority over the other is not known. First title from the pen of William Dean Howells (1837-1920), the "Dean of American Letters" far better known as the realist novelist who authored "The Rise of Silas Lapham" (1884) and many other fictions. MONAGHAN 45. .
