Author: SNELL, Roy J. Title: Sparky Ames of the Ferry Command
Description: Racine, WI, Whitman Publishing Company, 1943. Hardcover. Illustrations by Erwin L. Darwin. 8vo. Green pebble-grain paper over boards with orange lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 248pp, (3pp ads). Full-page line drawings, pictorial endpapers. Very good/very good. Text block lightly, evenly age toned per usual; jacket faintly edgeworn only, with no edge chips. Exceptional, tight and nice first edition of this volume in the "Fighters for Freedom Series," here involving the WAFS -- Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Services. If a juvenile owner were to have colored both endpapers and many of the line drawings in crayon would you call it "extra-illustrated" or "defaced"? We vote for the former, as all are accomplished neatly, delicately and tastefully -- and within the lines. In addition, this unique copy bears a choice autograph addition: The only film we can find revolving around the WAFS is the 1944 war film "Ladies Courageous," and tipped to the blank leaf facing the title page is a fine, heavy stock 4½" X 3" card signed large and bold in blue ballpoint by that film's star LORETTA YOUNG (1913-2000), who portrays Roberta Harper (a thinly-veiled real-life Jacqueline Cochran); she dates it 6 December 1984 at upper right. Laid in is the ideal bookmark: Young's original transmittal envelope. An outstandingly unusual copy. .
