GRAY, Thomas - Ode on the Pleasure Arising from Vicissitude Left Unfinished by Mr. Gray, and Since Completed

Title: Ode on the Pleasure Arising from Vicissitude Left Unfinished by Mr. Gray, and Since Completed
Description: San Francisco, John Henry Nash, 1933. Hardcover. Complete 2-volume set. Introduction by Leonard Whibley. 4to. Quarter vellum with gilt lettering and pale green paper over boards, similarly bound chemise, slipcase with paper spine label. xx, 9pp; 4pp. Color frontispiece. Fine/fine/very good. Slipcase (only) lightly worn and a tad age toned. Superb copy of this sumptuous production of this arcane bit from the British poet, scholar and man of letters (1716-71) most famed for his 1751 "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard." Colophon at rear of each volume notes limitation of 200 numbered copies (this #49). Printed for William Andrews Clark, Jr. who writes "Some Observations" on this obscure but fascinating bit of Thomas Gray miscellanea and whose Christmas 1933 "Compliments of" printed slip (8 3/4" X 2 3/4") is tipped to front flyleaf. The first volume bears this and Whibley's capable elaboration, enjoyable explanation of Thomas Rowlandson's frontispiece drawing and the poetry text itself, while the second volume has laid into it the lovely small 4to facsimile of one of the twelve typeset originals, Clark's personal copy. Like all Nash productions wonderfully accomplished using fine paper -- here hand-made Van Golder Zonen stock with special watermark. .
