Interestingly, this scarce pamphlet comes with a fine Autograph Note Signed from JOHN J. DUFF (1902-61), a New York attorney and Lincoln scholar who authored one book, the Pulitzer Prize-nominated "A. Lincoln, Prairie Lawyer" (1960), the seminal work on Lincoln's law career -- then died shortly afterward, which explains why his autograph material is rarely seen. 1p, heavy stock 3½" X 5½" glossy picture postcard, Springfield, IL, n.d. [postal cancellation 1 August 1958]. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93), who acted as Duff's literary agent. On the message portion of this postcard picturing the Illinois state capitol building, Duff boldly pens in blue ballpoint: "Am finishing my stint in the 'Lincoln Country.' Trust you enjoyed your trip" and signs boldly; address portion next door also in Duff's big, bold hand. No doubt Duff was in Springfield doing further research for his book. A seldom seen study accompanied by a pristine personal note from the author of a groundbreaking study of Lincoln's law career. MONAGHAN 1938. .
