Author: LINDSAY, Nicholas Vachel Title: Rhymes to Be Traded for Bread
Description: Springfield, Nicholas Vachel Lindsay, 1912. Paperback. Small 4to (6" X 9"). Self cover. (16pp). Very good. Mild edgewear, with couple of miniscule expert archival mends only. Verse for vittles! Ballad for a bunk! A lovely copy -- first and only edition -- and a rare survivor in sharp condition of this exceedingly scarce booklet printed on thin paper. Notes top of self cover, "Being New Verses.. Printed Expressly as a Substitute for Money." This Bohemian poet, a modern troubador, tramped about on foot in his early years before success as a poet, trading this and other self-published booklets for meals and a bunk -- for a few months in 1912 he did so on the way to New Mexico. Given their small, light, ephemeral nature, few of these survive, especially in as nice a condition as this example -- which is housed in a modern archival trifold case of black cloth with gilt lettering. .
