Author: DARBY, J.N. Title: Murder in the House with the Blue Eyes
Description: Indianapolis, The Bobbs-Merrill Company, 1939. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with gilt lettering, pictorial dust jacket. 302pp. Very good/good plus. Faintest of binding wear only; jacket edgeworn and a tad rubbed, with several tiny edge chips, but complete and overall still quite attractive. A tight and nice first edition of this murder mystery whose setting is "Christmas Eve in the bookstore." Delightful, evocative front panel jacket art. Darby's identity is unclear, as the rear jacket flap takes pains to note -- but clearly NOT the colorful 19th century British clerical figure (1800-82), but presumably Christine N. Govan (1897-1985), a prolific Southern writer known to use this as a pseudonym; she married a one-time bookshop owner and later historian Gilbert E. Govan, though this titles does not appear on lists of Christine Govan's titles. Quite scarce, in any case. .
