Front flyleaf bears a fine, archival, decorative-edged bookplate signed in full in turquoise ink by Gay Wilson Allen, whose groundbreaking, award-winning biography "The Solitary Singer: A Critical Biography of Walt Whitman" was published a century after "Leaves of Grass" first appeared in 1855 and signaled a tsunami of scholarly and popular works about the poet and his work. The famed Whitman scholar (1903-95) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for his "Waldo Emerson: A Biography." A lovely and unusual copy. .
