Author: WHITMAN, Walt Title: Leaves of Grass
Description: Garden City, Doubleday & Company, n.y. Hardcover. Edited by Emory Holloway. 8vo. Terra cotta and tan cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xx, 682pp. Very good/very good. Quite minor spotting of page edges and endpapers, else internally tight and bright; faint jacket age toning; small front pastedown ownership signature. Handsome later printing of the hefty 1926 "Inclusive edition," with subtitle elaborating: "From the text of the edition authorized and editorially supervised by his literary executors, Richard Maurice Bucke, Thomas B. Harned, and Horace L. Traubel." Though undated, the $6.95 jacket front flap price suggests circa 1960. Front flyleaf bears a fine, archival, decorative-edged bookplate signed in full in turquoise ink by Gay Wilson Allen, whose groundbreaking, award-winning biography "The Solitary Singer: A Critical Biography of Walt Whitman" was published a century after "Leaves of Grass" first appeared in 1855 and signaled a tsunami of scholarly and popular works about the poet and his work. The famed Whitman scholar (1903-95) was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize in 1981 for his "Waldo Emerson: A Biography." A lovely and unusual copy. .
