Parton (1822-91) was an English-born American journalist who became the most popular biographer of his day by somewhat fictionalizing his subjects and making them enjoyable, cranking out (among others) biographies of Horace Greeley (1855), Aaron Burr (1857), Andrew Jackson (1859-60), Benjamin Franklin (1864), Thomas Jefferson (1874) and Voltaire (1881).
