Handsome hand-colored map of the U.S. as it appeared at the outbreak of the Civil War, from the 1864 edition of "Mitchell's New General Atlas, Containing Maps of the Various Countries of the World, Plans of Cities, Etc." Interestingly, though published at the height of the war, the Confederate States of America are not noted or recognized in any way. Small insets at lower right show Hampton Roads and Norfolk Harbor and Pensacola Bay. Well colored and featuring a handsome decorative border. .
