Author: KELLER, Bill (introduction) Title: The New York Times: The Complete Front Pages 1851-2009
Description: New York, Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, 2009. Hardcover. Folio. White paper over boards, pictorial dust jacket. 472pp. Extensive illustrations, pictorial endpapers. Fine/near fine. Handsome first edition of this massive and heavy compilation, including three pristine CD-ROMs ("With All 54,693 Front Pages and Links to the Full Articles") and promotional card in special front pastedown pockets -- truly a gargantuan research and reference source that includes essays from 20 notable "New York Times" journalists including William Safire. PLUS this copy is uniquely extra-illustrated with an archivally tipped-in frontispiece: Typed Note Signed from ARTHUR HAYS SULZBERGER (1891-1968), 1p, 7¼" X 10½", New York, NY, 21 September 1939. Addressed to future notable Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. On "The New York Times" letterhead citing him as "Publisher," Sulzberger thanks this admirer for 48th birthday greetings, reading in part: "It was good of you to write me as you did, and I appreciate it.." Boldly signed in full in black ink. Sulzberger's father-in-law served as publisher until 1935, at which point he assumed that office until 1961; a couple years later his son (Arthur Ochs Sulzberger) stepped in and served for decades, then his son (Arthur Ochs Sulzberger, Jr.) took over, then his son (Arthur Gregg Sulzberger) in 2018 -- remarkable family continuity that carries on to this day. .
