Author: PORTER, A. Kingsley Title: The Seven Who Slept
Description: Boston, Marshall Jones Company, 1919. Hardcover. 8vo. Brown cloth-backed with paper label and large pictorial plates to both boards. 96pp. Very good. Faintest of edgewear and hint of age toning to endpapers. A tight and nice first edition of this play by the mysterious American archaeologist and art historian (1833-1933) and "Indiana Jones" prototype. From the library of Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III (b. 1930), son of Illinois governor and twice presidential candidate Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65) and certainly belonging to the governor's wife, noted socialite Ellen Borden Stevenson (1908-72), a noted poetry and literature enthusiast. On the front flyleaf, she boldly pencils her initials, one other unknown abbreviation and the date "Apr 7 -- '23." Also interesting is that the endpaper age toning is possibly smoking caused by a fire in the couples' Libertyville home, which burned down shortly after being built in 1935, destroying many of their possessions and antiques (rebuilt 1938) -- this small volume was apparently one of the rare survivors. A most unusual copy of a rather scarce title. .
