Title: The History of Illinois, from Its First Discovery and Settlement, to the Present Time
Description: New York, J. Winchester, 1844. Hardcover. 8vo. Dark blue blind-embossed cloth with gilt spine lettering. x, 492pp, (10pp ads). Good plus. Binding rather edgeworn; text block tight throughout, if moderately age toned with sporadic foxing; front flyleaves an appropriate period replacement and bottom ½" of title page excised; lacks map. Tight and quite decent first edition -- famously labeled by Wright Howes' "Chronologically the first, intrinsically the worst, history of this state," preceding Thomas Ford's better known "History of Illinois" by a full ten years. Without the map, but still quite uncommon. Discreet ex-library, with only whitish smudge at base of spine and faint blind-emboss on title page. GRAFF 421. HOWES B839. .
