Description: New York, Charles Scribner's Sons, 1949. Hardcover. Small 4to. Light green cloth with dark green lettering and pictorial stamping, pictorial dust jacket. (31pp). Numerous color illustrations. Near fine/very good. Mild jacket edgewear. A tight and lovely early (not first) printing of this Caldecott Medal winner (1950), with circular gold foil label at lower right of front jacket panel. Front flyleaf is filled with his typically enormous inscription and signature (floral-decorated capital letters of recipient's name a full 4½" tall!) in blue ballpoint: "to Blanche Haye / with all best wishes / from Juan and me / Leo Politi / Spring 1951." Early printing, with $2.00 jacket price and "Juaniti" only on rear jacket flap. Politi (1908-96) was an author and illustrator known for his twenty children's books. .
