Author: POHL, Frederick J. Title: The Viking Explorers
Description: New York, Thomas Y. Crowell Company, 1966. Hardcover. 8vo. Burgundy cloth with green and black spine lettering, pictorial dust jacket. xi, 246pp. Maps, illustrations, map endpapers. Near fine/very good. Faint jacket edgewear. A tight and quite lovely first edition of this controversial work by the prolific writer (1889-1991) -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped to half-title page is a special heavy stock 5" X 3" card, boldly signed by Pohl in blue ballpoint and dated by him 26 April 1977 at upper right. Notes front jacket panel, "Their lives, customs, and daring voyages.. Including the earliest known map of the New World.." In this and other works Pohl espoused theories of the Vikings reaching the Americas. Uncommon -- especially with signature. Original Pohl transmittal envelope laid in -- the perfect bookmark. Front flyleaf bears 1967 ownership signature of Robert Parker Coffin (1917-2019), noted Chicago architect and engineer whose civic leadership earned a road named in his honor - strangely and interestingly, both he and Pohl lived to the ripe old age of 102!.
