Description: N.p. Forrest Campbell, n.y. Hardcover. Illustrations by Louis Bednar. 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering. 150pp, 150pp. Foldout map frontispiece, full-page line drawings. Fine. First edition and possibly even a one-up printing of this rather homespun production whose text is classic typewriter font. (Recipient's name and author's signature penned in green ballpoint.) Undated, but first title bears 1977 date and second title 1978. First tale consists of darkish photocopies (as issued), while second tale is offset printed. Original (not mimeographed) typed "The Young Philanthropist" statement tipped in facing colophon leaf summarizes this tale and typed "About the Author" statement tipped in facing first text page. Campbell (1905-?) co-founded the Horatio Alger Society (still going strong today) in 1961 and served as their first newsletter editor, self-publishing these two rags-to-riches novellas "in the true Alger fashion." Front pastedown bears the boys juvenile series-theme pictorial bookplate of R.E. Sawyer, president of The Horatio Alger Society. Very scarce. .
