Author: McGUFFEY, William H. Title: Mcguffey's New Fifth Eclectic Reader: Selected and Original Exercises for Schools
Description: Cincinnati, Van Antwerp, Bragg & Co, 1866. Hardcover. 12mo. Black calf spine with gilt lettering and green blind-embossed cloth boards. 338pp. Marbled page edges. Good plus. Front and rear cloth boards age toned, rubbed and cornerworn, though leather spine is surprisingly nice and with gilt lettering bright, with tiny chips at head and tail only; endpapers age toned, with faint dampstaining evident. A tight and fairly attractive copy of a title invariably found in miserable condition. This is the "Electrotype Edition" of a volume in the "Eclectic Educational Series." The famed "McGuffey Readers" were published in truly gargantuan numbers throughout much of the 19th century, though the majority seem to have been abused and read to death. Copies as handleable and presentable as this are surprisingly uncommon. Child's ownership signature from Crawfordsville, Indiana on inner flyleaf, and though not so marked, this copy hails from the library of Union brigadier general Mahlon Dickerson Manson (1820-95), Indiana politician and congressman. .
