Karl was elder brother (1893-1990) of William (1899-1966), with whom he founded the famed Menninger Clinic of Topeka, Kansas, pioneers in the treatment of behavioral disorders, and Philip B. (1928-2016) was one of William's three children and a long-time Menninger Clinic staffer; recipient was offspring of one of his nephews. .
