JANIS, Elsie (1889-1956) - Signature and Salutation

Title: Signature and Salutation
Description: The "Sweetheart of the AEF" was an American vaudevillian and comedian who conquered Broadway and London in popular shows, appearing also in a handful of silent and talking films and even writing film scripts and film music. Huge and bold "Best wishes -- / Elsie Janis" in brown ink on a 5¼" X 3" slip, n.p. n.y Very good. Faintly age toned, with minor mounting traces on verso. Accompanied by an interesting personal memento: an original gold foil matchbook, embossed "Elsie Janis" in black diagonally across the face of it. 1½" X 4" (matches removed for safety's sake, thus opens up to 4½" X 1½". Undated, of course, but likely of early 1950s vintage. Near fine. Manufactured by Universal Match Corp. of St. Louis, Missouri, these customized matchbooks were apparently produced for an entertainment bash of some sort at which one was produced for each celebrity guest as a placecard. Most unusual and likely unique. .
