Potter, Avery O. Craven, Robert W. Johannsen. This copy bears a choice autograph addition, being extra-illustrated with a Typed Letter Signed from Roy F. Nichols (who contributes "Why the Democratic Party Divided" to this volume) tipped to the leaf facing the title page, 1p, 8½" X 11", Philadelphia, PA, 4 April 1961. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar). Near fine. On "University of Pennsylvania" letterhead listing Nichols as vice-provost and dean, he chats cordially with Gates (officer with the New York Civil War Round Table) about his upcoming visit to NYC, which Gates apparently arranged -- likely Nichols was a guest speaker for this Round table. Signed boldly in full in blue ballpoint. Nichols (1896-1973) was an American historian best known for his 1948 Pulitzer Prize winner, "The Disruption of American Democracy. .
