A tight, nice second, revised edition of this 1841 study by this American author and diplomat (1815-90) -- popular and controversial as it harshly critiques England's social and labor inequities. Lester clearly reissued the book after the Civil War in order to add a section criticizing England's attempt to aid the Confederate cause. Not in Allan Nevins' "Civil War Books: A Critical Bibliography," although his 1863 "The Light and Dark of the Rebellion" is. Very uncommon. .
