MILLER, Francesca Falk - The Collected Poetry of Francesca Falk Miller

Title: The Collected Poetry of Francesca Falk Miller
Description: Chicago, Privately Printed, 1956. Hardcover. Preface by Preston Bradley. Small 4to. Light blue cloth. 295pp. Fine. Tight and pristine first edition of this hefty verse collection (issued without d.j.) This lovely copy belonged to Miller's occasional publisher, and tipped to the front flyleaf is an Autograph Letter Signed from Miller, 1p, 7¼" X 7 3/4", Palm Beach, FL, 27 January 1954. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman (1912-98), founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Near fine. Boldly penned in black ink. Miller and Newman both belonged to some unidentified club that presented regular speakers, and in this rather desperate letter Miller laments, "I am at a loss what to do! ..I can't get any reply to letters regarding speakers for the two dates I'm responsible for -- The Feb. meeting for 'Friends' (Eve.) and the May 22nd luncheon for Dr. Bradley. I wrote to Dr. B. (who had suggested [Clifton] Fadiman for May) asking him to send other names. No answer! ..Help me in this, Ralph.." Bradley (1888-1983), who provided this book's preface, was a noted and beloved Chicago personality, author and speaker, for many years pastor of the People's Church. Newman published two of Miller's books under his "Americana House" imprint: In 1954 he published her "Marked Corners: A Three Act Play About Young Abraham Lincoln in Indiana, 1816-1830" and in 1950 he published her historical fiction "Golden Heritage" -- and he likely had a hand in the publication of this poetry volume, for aesthetically this volume has the feel of an Americana House production. .
