The demolition of a house at 3033-3035 P Street in the Georgetown neighborhood of Washington, DC occasioned this history of that residence and its long-time occupant, Daniel Webster's secretary and biographer, author, librarian, explorer and government official Charles Lanman (1819-95). Title page bears the author's enormous and flamboyant inscription and signature in black ink, running from the top to the bottom of the page: "With best wishes / to / Mary C. Zimmer / from / Katharine McCook Knox / Washington D.C. / October 29 / 1964." Knox (1890-1983) was a Washington, DC art historian. .
