JANVIER, Thomas - In Old New York

Title: In Old New York
Description: New York, Harper & Brothers, 1894. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Brown cloth with gilt lettering and ornate gilt and black pictorial stamping. x, 285pp, (2pp ads). Frontispiece map, numerous illustrations, 12 maps. Very good. Faintest edgewear; jacket text portions neatly tipped to front pastedown and portion of front flyleaf. A lovely, tight and bright first edition of this detailed guide through a number of old New York neighborhoods, with a superb autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is an Autograph Quotation Signed from Janvier, 1p (lettersheet), 4½" X 7", St. Remy de Provenee, France, 28 January 1895. Boldly penned in thick black ink, Janvier pens within quotation marks a funny excerpt about books in faux old English: "As there bee Appel trees stunted wych yet doe yielde perchance one single Appell that is faire, soe even a booke foolishe in its varse may contain heer or ther a little bitte yt is goode." Signed after in full with and place (where the Provencal descended author lived for three years and used as a setting in several books). An outstanding and unusual copy of this uncommon title. Janvier (1849-1913) was an American writer who produced numerous works of history, travel and short stories. .
