Robertson Jr. as "Opinionated and rationalizing memoirs by high-ranking officers on both sides [which] make this work one of the most quoted in Civil War literature." This reprint titles the first volume "The Opening Battles," the second volume "The Struggle Intensifies," the third volume "The Tide Shifts" and the fourth volume "Retreat with Honor."
