Gerald McMurtry Lecture -- with fine autograph addition: Tipped opposite the title page is a Typed Letter Signed from Simon, 1p, 8½" X 11", Carbondale, IL, 25 February 1982. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On letterhead of "The Ulysses S. Grant Association," Simon raves about Louisiana State University Press and their Civil War releases, then chats about the latest two volumes of "The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant" publishing project that consumed much of Simon's career. Signed simply "John" in blue fineline. Simon (1933-2008) was a prolific Civil War editor and scholar, though controversy dogged his later years. .
