Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln/Civil War researcher). Brief cordial note to this officer with the New York Civil War Round Table: "Roy [Basler] is committed for the weekend but Lloyd [Ostendorf] and I will be happy to join you Friday evening." Signed simply "Dave" in black fineline. Mearns (1899-1981) was the Library of Congress's long-time manuscript division chief. .
