Author: LEE, Jennifer B. Title: Lincoln and the American Political Tradition: An Exhibition in Honor of the 175th Anniversary of the Birth of Abraham Lincoln
Description: Providence, John Hay Library, 1984. Paperback. Introduction by Mark E. Neely, Jr. Small 4to. Stiff blue wrappers. 72pp. Illustrations. Near fine. First edition. Sole printing of this catalogue of an exhibition that ran from May 1st to August 31st, 1984, limited to 1000 copies -- with fine autograph addition: Tipped to inside front wrapper is a Typed Note Signed from Neely, 1p, 8½" X 11", Fort Wayne, IN, 1984 February 28. Addressed to Dr. Gerhard P. Clausius, noted Lincoln collector and scholar. Very good. On letterhead of "The Louis B. Warren Lincoln Library and Museum," the noted historian thanks Clausius for some unnamed "little item," then comments interestingly on Mary Lincoln: "Please do not think us unsympathetic to Mary. We simply refuse to be so sympathetic toward her that we must make villains of Robert, the laws, and the courts of Illinois." Boldly signed in full in black fountain pen. Also tipped in is a carbon copy of Clausius's February 10, 1984 letter to Neely chatting about Mary Lincoln. .
