DELAND, Margaret (1857-1945) - Typed Note Signed / Unsigned Portrait

Title: Typed Note Signed / Unsigned Portrait
Description: This popular American novelist, short story author and poet, an advocate of literary realism, began with the bestselling "John Ward, Preacher" in 1888 (her first book), continuing through dozens more titles over the next half century, including the series of "Old Chester" novels set in the Pittsburgh area of her childhood. TNS, 1p, 6" X 9¼", Boston, MA, 1940 March 7. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates (1914-93, noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar). Near fine. On pictorial letterhead of "The Sheraton" (in which she lived her final years and died), the writer thanks an admirer for birthday greetings and comments on her 1916 and 1935 releases (respectively): "It pleases me to know that you liked THE RISING TIDE (which I think has been forgotten by everybody except the author)! and that you found IF THIS BE I, interersting.." (The exclamation mark quoted was added in Deland's hand.) Boldly signed in black ink. Accompanied by a fine, delightful heavy stock 8" X 11" unsigned portrait, a sepia-tone turn-of-the-century half-length image of a youngish Deland in Victorian garb seated clutching a magazine. .
