Author: GLAZUNOV, Ilya Title: Ilya Glazunov
Description: Moscow, N.p. 1973. Hardcover. 4to. Glossy pictorial paper over boards. (Ca. 150pp). Frontispiece, extensive illustrations (many color), pictorial endpapers. Very good. Faint edgewear. Tight and handsome probable sole printing of this Russian language text whose title is simply the artist's name and whose publisher is certainly given -- if only our complete lack of Cyrillic weren't in the way! In any case, this controversial Russian artist, sculptor and architect (born 1930) is known as the "People's Artist of Russia" and is well-known for his historical and religious imagery. In 1973 a noted exhibition of his work was held at the Manege exhibition hall in Moscow, and this book is the accompaniment to that exhibit. On the title page, which features only a large facsimile of his signature, Glazunov pens an enormous six-line inscription on black marker (entirely in Russian), signing at the close and dating it Moscow 1978. From the library of U.S. Senator Adlai E. Stevenson III of Illinois (son of the Illinois governor and presidential candidate, great-grandson of the vice president under Cleveland), to whom it may have been presented by the artist during a Russian visit. .
