Tight, attractive first edition of this slim study of "the last territorial 'trouble spot' in Western Europe," a portion of Southern Tyrol formerly Austrian now an autonomous province in northern Italy. This unusual copy was apparently sent (likely by Czikann-Zichy) to then-U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Adlai E. Stevenson II (1900-65), better known as the Illinois governor who twice lost a presidential bid to Eisenhower in 1952 and '56 -- makes sense that the author would want the famed ambassador familiar with his work. Tension between Austria and Italy caused this issue to be taken up by the United Nations at this same time, though ultimately this region remained under Italian control.A firmly pencilled "Ack" at lower left of front flyleaf was Stevenson's secretary's standard marking that she had acknowledged receipt of a book. Stevenson's large rubber-stamped ownership signature appears at the top of this same page. .
